Great article, such Nostalgia, an era that will never be replicated, Diamonds on Thursday night ?, The Twilight Zone and my favourite Club Z.. JC and I would hang out after the club closed and chill listening to tracks for hours, many great memories and sadly virtually no photographic evidence of the times maybe thats why we all hold it so dear to our hearts.

Great article . However I have not yet heard of an article about a night club in the late 70 - early 80,s called "Heavens" located at Bloor and Yonge under the Hudson Bay . Resident DJ at that time was Charlie B (Charles Branche)??? This club drew tons of stars and was definitely a huge contributor to Toronto disco scene!! Therefore a huge pioneer for Toronto dance music!!!
what's strange is that o couldn't find any articles online pertaining to Club Heavans???

Does anyone know where Dave is today? I've been trying to get hold of him. I'm a huge fan of his. When I listened to his radio show "Dave's Dance Music", I recorded 100+ cassette tapes of music and now I'm trying to ID them. I'm a 80s-90s house, freestyle, techno, etc. vinyl collector and also an audiophile. I wish I was old enough to go to Copa and Club Z but in 1986 I was only 12 years old :-(.

Great club… Recall some good dance music and then suddenly silence for a few seconds followed by ACDC’s Shook Me All Night Long! Awesome!
Also remember going there on pitch black nights and coming out only to face white sunlight punishing you for staying till the end.
How about the dude in at the bar selling pop and always tipping himself…wierdo.
Then along came Club Focus. It was all over for me and club z – there was no turning back.

11:10 pm on June 9, 2014

<strong>djstardom
</strong>
This article sure brings back memories of the clubbing days. It’s funny couple friends of mine we were just talking about those days and how everything was so laidback, the music was hype and the atmosphere had a certain type of ambience.
Can’t speak for all, but djin house music in that era surely had a vibe for more better then the music today.
Anyhow thank you for the article, I will definitely share this with others
Cheers

8:52 am on January 12, 2013

<strong>altenator </strong>

I remember that place so well. Sherwin and Chico kicked some serious ass spinnin. I remember quite a few late late early mornings comin’ home on the bus still high from the tunes and the people. So underground. Very few of my friends nowadays believe me when I talk about it. JC Ray was a phenomenal DJ and I learned so much just watching him spin when he was in Sunshine Sound Crew and at Club Z. So many memories…thanks for the trip down memory lane!

4:30 pm on December 12, 2012

<strong>Ziggy </strong>

Those were the day’s Sherwin and Chico put Charles on the Toronto map for sure! from Hagerman’s to Kongos to Club Z….Amadeus and Bedrock!….Sherwin definitely had the underground beats going ON!

1:20 am on March 1, 2012

<strong>jeff h </strong>

Loved the club and spent many nights taking the all-night Yonge 97 bus home but Charles Khabouth left a bad taste and to this day i will not step foot into any of his establishments. Me and a friend promoted a party at Club Z in exchange for half of the door fee less expenses. We spent a lot of time getting all our friends and then some to come to the club, which was packed, but at the end of the night there was hardly any money in the till and we left just about empty handed. On another visit to the club I saw him going in the ticket booth which was staffed by one of his girls and putting cash in his pocket!
mystery solved.

5:57 pm on February 17, 2012

<strong>MVF
</strong>
Surely you realize that that proves nothing. Managers and owners hit up door sales to close out work payments, top up tills, move money to a secure place. What, you think he’d of kept it in his hand waving it around as he walked to wherever he was going? Try again.

8:27 pm on February 24, 2012

I’d like to know what month and year you had this and it was probably a Friday night. CK never gave up his Saturday night door take, before I got there. I left TZ ’85, because they were opening up Fresh, plus they owed me back pay, so I went to work with CK (15 yrs.) and because he made me a good offer. What left a bad taste in your mouth was your own lack of business experience. The expenses were covered, everyone made a paycheck and zero profit. You think you drew your crowd but you didn’t, CK gave young entrepreneurs like you chances on Fridays. Most the time is was all hype about what everyone could bring in. It was both CK and I hitting the streets and working the door that made it happen. DJ JC was pure funk when I met him but I had to widen his knowledge of music. I’d been a dj from ’73-’85 so I help guide him. My job ws to clean up the crowd through selection.. It was all the work of the staff that made it work, Betsy, Daniella Cohen, Andrew & Sonny the doormen, Big Bob and Rocky. The best anyone did there were the school gigs on Fridays before we opened up for reg business. There were a lot of people who worked behind CK and helped make him who he’s become. Unless you were working behind the scene’s, in the office, at one another”s home, in the car etc. nobody knows the real truth. IN ’87 I went into professional security but stayed working with CK until 2000 and in all his clubs and adventures. Love and peace and always Put the needle on the Record’..

3:20 pm on January 2, 2014

Club Z was one the first clubs I used to frequent back in the dayz. There was always a good vibe. The music was always fresh and banging. It was like my training ground for DJing, I learned a lot from those guys. I remember spending lots of time in the movie lounge with the ladies as well as the dance floor. Mad love and respect for this club. Thanks for the article, nice to learn more about its roots and its history.

2:25 pm on February 16, 2012

Thanks for this!!
Being someone who was born in the early 80s, I totally wish I grew up during these times so I’m grateful to read about the city’s history of club culture.

1:12 pm on February 16, 2012

I certainly had a great time those good old days . I would say it was a spring board as well , as I played many other clubs including one of my favourite , Rockit. I’ve got tears now .

4:27 pm on March 22, 2012
